Viva Films has recently released the teaser to the highly-anticipated return of the box-office Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo to the big screen in “Miss Granny”.
A Pinoy remake of the 2014 South Korean comedy-drama film, the film follows an old woman who is given another shot in finding happiness after being magically brought back to her younger self. The film is directed by box-office director Binibining Joyce Bernal.
But did you know that there are different versions of the story long before this Pinoy adaptation? Let’s meet the other versions of Miss Grannies!
1. Miss Granny/ 수상한 그녀 (2014). The original South Korean box-office hit starring Na Moon-hee (from the 2005 TV series “My Name is Kim Sam-Soon”) as the old Oh Mal-soon and Shim Eun-kyung as her younger version, who renames herself as Oh Doo-ri. Korean singer-actor Jung Jin Young (from the 2016 TV series “Love in the Moonlight”) plays her grandson Ji-Ha who invited her to join their band to become their vocalist.
This South Korean blockbuster was a huge hit in South Korea after opening in cinemas back in January 2014, with 8.65 million tickets sold. The film grossed a total of US$ 51.7 million at the box-office.
2. 20 Once Again (2015). This Chinese adaptation stars Gua Ah-leh as the 70 year old Meng Li Jun while Yang Zishan plays her younger self. Former EXO member Lu Han plays her grandson Xiang Qian Jin. The film was also a box-office success, grossing US$59.01 million in China.
3. Sweet 20 (2015). This is the Vietnamese version which was released the same year as it’s Chinese counterpart. The fantasy romcom stars Minh Duc as the 70-year-old Mrs. Dai, while Vietnamese singer-actress Miu Le plays her 20-year-old self. The film broke Vietnam’s box-office record for the highest grossing local film, earning US$ 4.76 million.
4. Sing My Life aka Suspicious Girl/ Ayashii Kanojo (2016). This is the Japanese remake of the South Korean film “Miss Granny” and was released in April 2016. The film stars Mikako Tabe as Katsu Seyama/ Setsuko Otori.
5. Suddenly Twenty (2016). The Thai remake featuring Davika Hoorne (who played the ghost wife of Mario Maurer in the 2013 box-office smash hit “Pee Mak”) as Parn along with Thailand heartthrob Kritsanpoom “JJ” Pibulsonggram as Boom, Parn’s grandson.
6. Sweet 20 (2017). This Indonesian remake stars Niniek L. Karim as the 70-year-old Fatmawati, who gets magically transformed back to her younger self, played by Tatjana Saphira.
7. Miss Granny. This Pinoy adaptation stars Sarah Geronimo as the lead, with Nova Villa as her older self. In the film, an elderly woman (Nova Villa) regains her youthful appearance (Sarah G.), changes her name and embarks on a quest for happiness. It also stars James Reid as her grandson, together with Xian Lim.
