Japeth Aguilar recently apologized for the brawl through Twitter. The said altercation broke out in the middle of a game between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia Boomers in July 2, Monday at the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
At the end of the day, Gilas lost to Boomers by default after the brawl-filled game. As the Gilas bench was cleared, the Boomers on the bench never left their area in the middle of the brawl.
In the Twitter apology, Japeth also wrote how the incident could have been dealt with differently. He added that their emotions had run high. He continued that he just defended their brother.
He also pointed out that they had no excuse on responding how they did.
“The incident last night could have been dealt differently but emotions were running high. In the heat of the moment we just wanted to defend our brother. I admit that we acted on emotion rather than logic and this is regrettable because the situation could have been pacified and could have ended differently. There is no excuse for how we responded.”
Japeth also acknowledged that they were representing the country as they wear their uniforms. He further apologized towards the Filipino people. He also apologized to the Australian team and fans everywhere.
“As national team athletes, we are representing more than just ourselves as we wear our uniforms. How we acted last night is not a just representation of the Filipino people. For this, I’d like to apologize to my fellow Filipinos, to the Australian team, to their supporters and to Basketball fans everywhere. Hopefully, we can move forward with humility, compassion and respect for one another.”
