Suzette Doctolero remains one of the most influential people who criticize the portrayal of the Philippine culture on television. In a recent Twitter exchange, RS Mallari slammed Suzette on criticizing ABS-CBN shows mainly epicserye Bagani.
Suzette revealed why she remains critical on shows portraying Philippine culture.
Recently, Suzette slammed the writers of Bagani on the distortion of the Philippine culture and mythology on the show. Although she commended Dimples Romana for the acting, she slammed the show on the disappointing depiction of a babaylan.
In the said Twitter exchange, RS also asked what happened to GMA Network’s shows. He talked about the shows may need CPR, referring to a scene in Kambal Karibal where the nurse couldn’t perform a proper resuscitation.
“I think @SuziDoctolero should start looking at her garden before throwing shit on other’s. She has the audicity to criticize Abs-Cbn’s show when GMA’s shows suck and mostly rip-offs. Whatever happened to the GMA of old?’ It used to be the trailblazer. Guess it needs “CPR”.”
Suzette quoted the tweet and wrote why she remains critical on the portrayal of the Philippine culture. She also acknowledged that there are three networks: ABS-CBN, GMA and TV5. The Philippine culture remains the garden of many. So, why wouldn’t she defend and speak up for it?
“Tatlo ang istasyon. Isa lang ang ating kultura. At yang kultura na yan ang malawak na garden ko. Natin. Nating lahat. Bakit di iimik at di tatalak?”
A netizen, Concepcion, also rushed to Suzette’s aid and agreed with her statement. Although people claim that the show remains a fantasy series, Bagani still uses words which pertains to Philippine historical and cultural people and events.
“Agree. Pilit nilang sinasabing kathang isip at fantaserye pero gumagamit sila ng mga salita o pangalang nasa kultura ng bansa. Syempre kapag panatiko ka ng isang bagay kahit alam mong may mali tama pa rin sa kanila yun. #HypocrisyAsIsBest”
RS would like to believe Suzette’s cultural advocacy. However, coming from a competing network, RS finds it biased.
“It isn’t your first. I would like to believe the “cultural advocacy” you’re talking about but coming from someone working for the competing network, it will just sound bias, don’t you think? But if you really feel you’re fighting a good fight then I’ll leave you be..”
Suzette clarified that it isn’t about competition. She also concluded that it’s about being a Filipino.
“Yes. Kungdi mo kayang magsalita against it then just leave me alone at hayaan mo ako sa laban ko. Di ito kumpetensya. Pagiging Filipino ito.”
