- Erik Matti explains the value of Acting Workshops
- The director believes that workshops can help both the artist and director
- Acting workshops have more benefits other than learning new acting techniques
Erik Matti tweeted last May 2 that actors should believe in acting workshops. He said that workshops help both the artist and the director improve and it’s a perfect place to experiment and learn one’s strength and weakness.
It is true that some actors today don’t believe in workshops. Millennials, in particular, want everything to be instant.
They would rather pour their effort on their respective social media accounts, gain likes and grow their fanbase, instead of developing their talents and invest for the future.
“Some #actors dont believe in workshops. #Workshops allow #directors to calibrate performances, get the actors to know the characters in detail and set the tone for the work ahead. Actors should take advantage of that. It’s a place to experiment without the cost of a shoot day.”
What they fail to realize is acting workshops have other benefits other than improving one’s acting skills.
Discover the areas that need improvisation
Acting allows the artist to know her strengths and weaknesses and focus to improve these weaknesses so s/he can be a versatile artist.
This is also beneficial to the director to know what type of genre befits the artist. That way, both the actor and the director’s minds collaborate and will not put the artist in a project that’s not right for him or her.
For example, the Hollywood star Tom Hanks will only take drama movies because that’s his area of expertise. His movies are always a hit because he knows exactly what to do. Moreover, he knows that horror movies are not for him and that’s why we don’t see him in one.
Learn to accept criticism
Learning how to properly digest negative feedback from the director is also important. If the artist finds humility and accepts the fact that s/he is not perfect, then there’s when growth begins.
Accepting one’s flaws and imperfections can also make them a better person, especially today that netizens can be very rude. Attending acting workshops is one way to protect your career and avoid any social media feud that may lead to permanently destroying one’s image.
Network Growth
Acting workshops also give the artist the pleasure to meet other artists, film producers, network management, or anyone involved in the industry. There’s a lot of knowledge the artist can acquire from these people by sharing ideas, acting techniques, and even opportunities.
Plus, it doesn’t hurt to form a good friendship bond with other people in the industry.
