- Jimmy Bondoc criticized Facebook’s move to partner with Rappler and Vera Files for fact-checking
- On April 12, Facebook announced its partnership with Vera Files and Facebook to launch a fact-checking program in the Philippines
- The partnership was made to “reduce the reach of false news stories on Facebook, check their facts, and rate their accuracy” according to Clair Deevy, Facebook Director for Community Affairs for Asia Pacific.
After reports surfaced about how Facebook tapped Vera Files and Rappler as its partners in fact checking everything that goes on the social media site, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) AVP for Entertainment and singer Jimmy Bondoc urged her fellow DDS followers to shut their Facebook accounts down.
He also asked for suggestions where to migrate after leaving Facebook.
Jimmy Bondoc’s ‘delete Facebook’ call
“DDS PLEASE SHARE PO
“FACEBOOK TAPS VERA FILES, RAPPLER AS THIRD-PARTY FACT CHECKERS IN THE PHILIPPINES”
I GUARANTEE YOU, IF THIS HAPPENS, I WILL PERSONALLY COMMENCE A NATIONWIDE PETITION TO DELETE FACEBOOK I ALSO ASSURE YOU THAT I WILL BE SUPPORTED STRONGLY.
I ALSO ASK COMMENTERS TO KINDLY SUGGEST ASAP A NEW SOCMED PLATFORM THAT WE CAN MIGRATE TO.
GOOD DAY TO ALL
#DeleteFacebookIF
#FacebookBecomesFriendster”
Bondoc’s move was widely supported by majority of his DDS followers. Even some yellow supporters (Liberal Party) also appear to be keen on seeing Bondoc’s vision bear fruit.
Yellows, Reds, DDS agree
“I am declaring my support for Jimmy Bondoc’s brilliant idea. Mga Ka-DDS, let’s do this country a favor: sabay-sabay nating layasan ang Facebook. Now na! ”
“I am a Filipino and I totally support Jimmy Bondoc’s call for DDS to delete their Facebook accounts.
Retweet if you support his call.
#DDSdeleteFacebook”
“Jimmy Bondoc threatening to rally a petition to shutdown Facebook is the most hilarious thing I’ve ever read. It goes to show that the DDS Propagandists are dependent on FB and can’t stomach the fact that they might be policed online. 🙄🙄🙄”
“to the hardcore DDS like Jimmy Bondoc, i guess their fake news and Leni bashing is more important to them than keeping in touch with their family and friends. lmao. see ya! wouldnt wanna be ya”
“I made a tasteless pun about Jimmy Bondoc’s suggestion to shift social media use off Facebook. I insinuated that Grindr has better engagement. I apologise if this has offended members of the LGBTQ community . I have deleted the post. Please accept my sincerest apologies.”
“May unities kami ni Jimmy Bondoc. Yung mga nagalit sa FB for tying up with Vera files and Rappler, should delete their FB (now), syempre kasama si Jimmy Bondoc. And I would encourage Mocha Uson to show solidarity with Bondoc and delete her FB immediately too. #GoJimmy.”
“Breaking: Jimmy Bondoc at DDS, lilipat na raw sa Friendster. Friendster, bumangon sa hukay, lilipat na raw ng sementeryo. 😁👊😂 ”
As of this posting, the account of Jimmy Bondoc threatening to leave Facebook with fellow DDS supporters is currently unavailable. The singer may have decided to deactivate his account or it was reported on Facebook.
Before joining the government-owned and controlled corporation as AVP for Entertainment in July 2016, Bondoc is a singer who rose to fame with songs such as ‘Let Me Be The One,’ and ‘The Man I Was With You.’ Bondoc was one of the many celebrities who actively campaigned for President Rodrigo Duterte before the elections.
