- ‘Status Update’ to hit PH Cinemas on Aprill 11.
ABS-CBN Films-Star Cinema is set to release the hit American teen comedy romance “Status Update” in Philippine cinemas this summer.
From a screenplay of Jason Filardi, “Status Update,” helmed by Scott Speer, who directed the 2012-hit “Step Up Revolution,” is topbilled by Ross Lynch and Olivia Holt.
Lynch made a name for himself starring as Austin Moon in the Disney Channel hit comedy series “Austin & Ally” for 4 seasons. This role has earned him 4 Kids Choice Awards — Favorite TV Actor (2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016), 2 Teen Choice Awards for Choice TV Actor: Comedy (2014 & 2015) and the Number 1 spot on iTunes for the “Austin & Ally” soundtrack. In 2013, he starred as Brady in Disney Channel’s blockbuster original movie “Teen Beach Movie,” which premiered to 13.5 million viewers, making it the one of the most watched movies in cable TV history.
Hold, meanwhile, made a name for herself in the hit Disney XD series “Kickin’ It,” inspiring the Disney Channel to create “I Didn’t Do It” as her own starring vehicle. On the music front, last year she released her EP titled “Olivia,” with her first single “Phoenix” debuting on the iTunes Top 10. In addition, her song “History” has been blowing up the Spotify charts with over 100+ Million streams to date.
“Status Update” revolves around a high-school student named Kyle Moore (Lynch), who after being uprooted by his parents’ separation and unable to fit into his new hometown, stumbles upon a social media app he discovered, which is called YOUniverse, that causes his status updates to come true.
While Kyle gets everything he wants, including the power to avenge to those who bullied him and to impress the love of his life Dani McKenzie (Holt), with the use of YOUniverse, he also slowly becomes a victim of his own lust for acceptance and social media fame.
How will Kyle get out of the trap in his life he never realized he himself made?
“The goal was to create a story that was relevant today but had the fun and heartfelt feeling,” says Filardi, who also brought hit screenplays like “Big” and “17 Again.”
“A magical, modern day fairy tale…. and then bring that story to the big screen,” he adds.
“Status Update” premieres April 11 in theaters all over the Philippines.
