- Karen Davila questioned casino entry in Boracay.
- Boracay rehabilitation clouded by casino construction.
Seasoned journalist Karen Davila once again took to Twitter to air her concern on the latest government move.
In her Twitter account, the Kapamilya broadcaster aired concern on the government’s plan to close one of the country’s prime tourist destination Boracay.
Davila shared apprehension on the planned closure of Boracay after the government has recently given permit to Chinese casino giant Galazy to build and construct casino resort in the island.
“Allowing the construction of a casino in Boracay while the island is temporarily shotdown for rehabilitation is in absolute bad taste” she tweeted.
In a succeeding tweet, Karen questioned how can the rehabilitation work when a new casino will be constructed which will then attract more tourists that can again contribute to Boracay exploitation.
“Boracay’s capacity is only at 40,000 a day but tourists are at 54,000. DENR even thought about limiting tourists to save the island. How then, can a new casino help in this move?!,” Davila asks.
Last February, President Rodrigo Duterte threatened closure of the island for environmental rehabilitation because according to him the famous tourist destination has become a cess pool.
“I will close Boracay. Boracay is a cesspool,” the president said during a business forum in Davao City.
But at the same time, after a month, the government has issued permit to casino giant Galaxy to build and operate a casino resort in the island.
Palace spokesperson Harry Roque even stretched in saying the closure will be done to avoid impediment in the construction.
