I am one of those people who are fond of reading self-help books and pick-me-uppers, simply because I find these kinds of books inspiring and eye-opening—as they should be. In our lives, there are those things that we clearly know for ourselves yet we refuse to acknowledge until someone says it out loud for us or until someone else shakes our shoulders, looks us in the eye, and says, “Know. This.”
This book I will be talking about in this review did EXACTLY that to me, and I couldn’t be happier that I picked it up and read it.
#BestMeEver, Of Positivity and Possibilities is the first book by author Michael “Myke” P. Celis that I got to read. #BestMeEver is not Celis’ first and only book as he’s published another prior to this one, called “100 Life Lessons for Success: Shout Outs for One’s Sensibilities” (which I’m planning to read as well). Upon reading around and basing it on the theme of the books he’s published, there’s no question that Celis is the kind of person and author whose goal is to inspire and motivate people through his works.
Going back to #BestMeEver, it is a compilation of messages that aim to make you realize things. The messages inside are of great reminders as well about the things that truly matter in life, which kind of people you should focus on, and which things about yourself you must work hard on.
The first thing I noticed about this book—and also the first thing I liked about it—is that it contains one message per page and the paragraphs are short with three to four lines usually. I liked the format and how easy it was to read stuff, because let’s admit it, sometimes books like this could get boring along the way due to the long paragraphs which contain redundant thoughts. But luckily for me, #BestMeEver is direct to the point which makes it easy to read and go through.
Having said that, if I remember it correctly, I think I finished 30 pages in one sitting. It’s that easy to read. I believe I could have finished the entire book in an hour if I wanted to. Thankfully I got myself to put it down for a while and save the rest of the pages for another day. I eventually decided to read 3 pages a day instead until I finish it because here’s another thing: if you’re in need of a little something to help you start the day with a good perspective, then the messages in #BestMeEver are definitely it for you. That’s what I did. I limited my reading to 3 pages a day, enough to keep me going through the day (and because I didn’t want to finish the whole book too fast). The quotes are meant to make you realize things anyway so it’s better if you get to really digest the content well.
Another reason why I liked #BestMeEver is that most of the messages inside the center on the reader’s individuality. I am so into self-love, self-care, and prioritizing your own’s welfare above all else, that’s why it made me happy that this book promotes all of those.
And since you’re already here, I might as well share with you my top 10 favorite quotes from the book (in no particular order):
- Consider this: It’s not always about working hard; it’s about working smart. It’s not about the long hours; it’s about making the most of the given time, enough for you to do other things you love. When you are able to balance your priorities well, then you’ll never get burned out. Keep that in mind today.
- You don’t need the approval of others to validate your worth—all you need is to learn to love yourself more by embracing your flaws and continuously improving yourself. Focus on what is worth your time and let go of what is not.
- Remember this: Someday you’ll get there. No matter how long it takes. You’ll definitely get there. So hang on.
4. The only reason why sometimes you fail to realize your dreams is because you refuse to face reality. Go ahead and savor each win. Never consider escaping, but rather just make the most of each experience. Only then will your dreams become within reach.
5. You don’t have to listen to all the unnecessary criticisms thrown at you. In the same manner, you don’t have to react to everything that’s on your plate at present. Choose your battles well. Being at peace with yourself is more important than making a point.
6. Be inspired in everything that you do. Remember that others draw inspiration from you. You have purpose and relevance. Keep that in mind.
7. When you give it all you got, you will never regret whatever you will get in return. A lesson learned or a reward earned will always be worth it. Never have regrets. Always give your best.
8. Everyone deserves a second chance, even yourself. So don’t be hard on yourself. Rise after falling and shine on. Second chances present wonderful rewards. Hang on.
8. You don’t have to listen to all the unnecessary criticisms thrown at you. In the same manner, you don’t have to react to everything that’s on your plate at present. Choose your battles well. Being at peace with yourself is more important than making a point.
9. What makes you happy will make you feel free. So do what you love best and enjoy the freedom that comes with it. Judgment, hate, or any form of envy would not (and should not!) affect you in any way, simply because you are at peace.
10. Every time you close a chapter in your life, you are opening yourself to new possibilities ahead. Remain grateful it happened and always be optimistic for the best is yet to come. Remember, sometimes you need to let go to give yourself more space to grow.
There you go. I’m keeping these little messages slash reminders and file them under the folder “Words to Live By”. If you’re in need of a book that radiates positivity and inspiration, then I hope you know now which book to pick up. You might find your new favorite reminder and you might want to keep it in your pocket and bring it everywhere you go.
Always be the best YOU ever.
