- BL (Boy’s Love) dramas are becoming a big hit among Asian fans these days.
- Recently, the cast of the most popular Thai BL series visited Manila for a special fan meeting event.
Aside from Korean dramas, there is a new trend that is currently making waves among Filipinos these days. BL (Boy’s Love) is currently one of the most popular drama genres among Asian fans. And most of the popular BL dramas today are from the country of Thailand which is known to be one of the progressive countries in Asia when it comes to its LGBT community. Some of the best examples of these shows include 2 Moons, Make It right, Water boyy and What The Duck.
These shows feature onscreen guy-to-guy relationships which are adored by girls (and guys). It is no wonder that there is already a growing fan base for these shows here in the Philippines.
Because of this, last January 20, 2018, the cast of the most popular on-going BL drama series in Thailand, SOTUS S The Series, visited Manila to show their appreciation for their Filipino fans. The SOTUS S Fan Meeting, also known as Hazing in Manila 2018 was held in Tanghalang Pasigueno and was a joint venture between GMM TV Thailand (producer of SOTUS S the Series) and Full Royalties Events Production. The event was flocked not only by Filipino fans, but by the series’ international fans too. Some flew from China, HongKong, and even Thailand all the way here to Manila just to get a glimpse of their favorite BL stars. Ticket prices ranged from P900 (Gen Ad) up to P15,000 (Emperor).

The fan meeting was led by SOTUS S‘ lead stars Krist Perawat and Singto Prachaya who played Arthit and Kongpob respectively in the series. In the first season of their show (formerly titled SOTUS The Series), Kongpob (Singto) is a college freshman who stands up against the bullying of their fellow freshmen by seniors led by Arthit (Krist). After their endless fights, the two grew closer and fell for each other. In the second (and current) season of their show, they try to keep their relationship afloat despite all the difficulties they’re facing. The two stars were joined by fellow SOTUS actor Oaujun Khunatipapisiri, together with the new actors introduced in the second season of the show led by Fiat Pattadon, Nammon Krittanai, and Guy Sivakorn. Lucky fans got the chance to meet-and-greet their favorite Thai BL stars. The six Thai artists even played with some of the fans during the games in between their song and dance performances.

When asked what other places here in the Philippines they would like to visit aside from Manila, Thai BL Star Singto Prachaya said he “would like to go to the sea” but he doesn’t know the names of the beaches. He even asked the audience for their suggestions. Fans went crazy when he and fellow Thai BL star Krist Perawat were asked during a game of “Fast Talk”, ala-Boy Abunda style, what do they prefer: lights on or lights off. The whole place was filled with screams of delight as they both responded “Lights off!”.

“We appreciate your support,” says Krist to their fans in the jam-packed event. “We will miss you so much, because I think you guys are so very kind… you guys are so cute,” he said to their Filipino fans as their show was about to end. They promised their fans here in the Philippines that they’ll come back to the country to show their appreciation for their fans’ love and support for them.

Aside from the cast of SOTUS S The Series, other Thai BL Actors have been announced to be visiting the Philippines this year. This February, the BL loveteam OffGun, actors Off Jumpol and Gun Atthaphan, will be coming to Manila for Valentine’s day show and fan meeting to be held on February 10 at the Teatrino in Promenade, Greenhills. Also, 2 Moons actor Gxxod has been announced to have his solo show here in Manila later this year.
