The synopsis of having twins separated at birth or generally twins as the lead role has been used for a long time. However, Filipino viewers rarely see triplets on screen.
GMA Network used the said outline in 2007 “Super Twins” which starred Jennylyn Mercado and Nadine Samonte. Replacing the said fantasy-action series, 2007 “Impostora” also turned out to be about conjoined twins separated when they reached the right age. The said show starred Iza Calzado and Sunshine Dizon. They also used it in 2014 “Kambal Sirena” which starred Louise delos Reyes as the titular character.
Then, of course, ABS-CBN used the same premise in 2006 “Calla Lily” where Sharlene San Pedro played the two characters in the titular role. They also used it in 2010 “Agua Bendita” which turned out to be about 1/2 of the twins being born in water form. The said show starred Andi Eigenmann as the two characters in the titular role.
Although, twins on titular roles already dominate the screen, why can’t we top it another notch?
Filipino viewers rarely see triplets on screen. These are some of the shows that made it to the small screen that has three characters in the lead role:
Saan Ka Man Naroroon
This ABS-CBN drama series ran from April 1999 to March 2001. It stars Claudine Barretto as three contrasting roles: Rosario, Rosenda and Rose Marie. When their mother, Dolores, went into labor, a storm occurred which threatened their livelihood. Their father, Juancho, forced to leave her in the incapable hands of Violeta, Dolores’ sister.
Dolores gives birth to the triplets: Rosario, Rosenda and Rosita. However, Dolores’ former lover, Arsenio, who also turned out to be the attending physician, took the youngest triplet, Rose marie, out of his bitterness and resentment. Arsenio also convinced the couple that Rose Marie died at birth. Then, he went abroad to raise Rosita as Rosemarie where she remained ignorant of her true origin and grows up to be a very sophisticated young woman.
However, as the years pass, rivalry grows between the two remaining twins, Rosario and Rosenda. Rosario grew up to be charming and sweet but unhealthy which led her parents to become very attentive towards her. This led to Rosenda growing up jealous of Rosario, she becomes self-centered.
With such hatred, Rosenda confronted Rosario which led to the latter drowning at the sea. Although Rosenda convinced their parents of her death, a kindhearted couple found Rosario and raised her as their own.
From then on, the three sisters live separately, unaware of each other’s existence… Until they rediscover each other at the expense of their family’s well-kept secret and long-forgotten sins.
Marinara
This GMA Network fantasy-comedy series premieres on June 21, 2004. It stars Rufa Mae Quinto as three contrasting roles: Marie, Aira and Dolphina. The said television series tackles the journey of the triplets born out of the love of a mermaid, Oceana, and a man, Don Juan Miguel. To save them from any danger, they separated after birth.
Marie grew up as a conservative young woman. She strives to finish school and at the same time earn enough money to help her adoptive mother, Lelay.
Aira, however, became a flashy and brand-conscious spoiled brat. She dreams of becoming a big star someday. She wanted to be an actress, good enough to win an Oscar.
Dolphina stayed as a mermaid. She pursued her goals of finding her two other sisters. Unfortunately, fishermen accidentally caught her while she swam near the surface. Then, she became the main attraction of a local carnival.
The Blood Sisters
The upcoming ABS-CBN drama-action series features Erich Gonzales playing the three sisters: Erika, Carrie and Agatha. Although the story hasn’t been released, the corporation already gave the excited viewers a trailer teaser.
The said trailer begins with a sexy dancer Erika who lives in a rural place. She witnesses a murder after she declined to pursue a sexual encounter with a man from Manila.
As Erika tries to get away and goes on a run as the suspects aim to silence her, a sophisticated and beautiful Carrie comes along. Hiding under a van, Erika saw the suspects shoot Carrie. The latter bled while staring into Erika’s eyes. Erika, then, continued to assume Carrie’s identity to avoid the suspicion of her supposed death.
The third sister, Agatha, grew up as a reckless bad girl, craving for success in life. She doesn’t care whether she will hurt someone on the journey to success. The said trailer suggests that the three separated at birth.
