2017 has been another exciting year for Philippine TV.
The ratings war again was heated and interesting especially after AGB Nielsen implemented data format switching from NUTAM Household to NUTAM People.
But looking at all corners of the fight, one network really emerged victorious; ABS-CBN.
ABS-CBN managed to pull the competition away from its rival with flying colors making its star shine brighter. From daytime to primetime, ABS-CBN commanded the lead among TV programs, leaving GMA Network barely breathing.
FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano killing every opponent
Among the biggest winners for ABS-CBN is its long-running action drama teleserye “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano”.
This Coco Martin led teleserye has already owned the primetime block by eating all competitor fielded by its rival network.
No less than Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid quipped Coco’s power of beating every competition hurled against “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano”.
The Noontime Battle
Aside from “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano”, the hotly contested noontime timeslot also favored ABS-CBN.
Kapamilya’s “It’s Showtime” was able to pull a good fight and emerged victorious several times against the “institution” “Eat Bulaga!”. The biggest win was recorded March 11, 2017 were the Kapamilya noontime show topped the rankings and led “Eat Bulaga!” by 7.4%; 23.1% vs 15.7%.
Ivy Aguas Effect
Meanwhile, Kapamilya’s revenge in the ratings game was truly embodied by its revenge serye “Wildflower”.
The Maja Salvador led teleserye has brought back the pre-primetime slot to the Kapamilya network; the timeslot previously lorded by Kapuso game show “Wowowin”.
Since the start, “Wildflower” has also set the tempo of pre-primetime programming benefitting its post programming “TV Patrol”.
As of the latest data from AGB-Nielsen and Kantar, “Wildflower” still dominates its timeslot against “Wowowin”.
GMA Network’s Lifeline
While ABS-CBN seemed to hit all corners right, GMA Network is being buoyed by its afternoon drama “Ika-6 Na Utos”. The long-running Kapuso afternoon teledrama has helped GMA Network afloat and continue its TV ratings war against its rival ABS-CBN.
It’s continuous and the consistent topping of the daytime chart provided GMA network’s lifeline despite being overwhelmed by the Kapamilya network’s power and might.
And so I say, 2017 is definitely ABS-CBN’s year, no contest about that. From daytime to noontime, to pre-primetime and primetime, the Kapamilya network showed how to eat competition with great and entertaining programming.
And no amount of TV ratings format switching can break its momentum to pull away from its competition.
