Jake Zyrus also gave a powerful advise during his acceptance speech for RAWR Awards 2017.
In the recently concluded RAWR Awards 2017, Jake Zyrus won the ‘The Great Comeback‘ award and defeating Aljur Abrenica, Empoy Marquez, Richard Gutierrez, Sharon Cuneta, Angelika Dela Cruz, Ivan Dorschner, Louise Delos Reyes and Roxee B.
Jake Zyrus rose to fame when he was still Charice Pempengco, the little girl with a big voice. Charice was dubbed by Oprah Winfrey as “the most talented girl in the world.”
Charice’s exploration on her gender identity faced harsh criticism. In 2012, she changed her hairstyle making her look from a sweetheart to edgy. In 2013, she became more masculine and came out as a lesbian which earned more harsh insults.
In 2014, she appeared with a more boyish look: a much shorter hair and more tattoos. On the same year, she appeared in the Oprah Winfrey Show where she confirmed that “basically, my soul is male.”
Jake announced in June 2017 that he has adopted his current name, discontinued the use of “Charice Pempengco” as his name, and disclosed that he had had both breasts removed and had begun testosterone treatment. He had his first concert, “I Am Jake Zyrus” last October. He is now focused on introducing himself to his Filipino audience but also dreams on having an international following.
In his acceptance speech, he thanked the people who supported him and voted for him.
“Sobrang laki na opportunity na ‘to para sa career ko as Jake Zyrus since kakatapos lang ng concert ko na I Am Jake Zyrus. Thank you so much! Salamat sa mga sumusuporta.”
He ended his speech with an inspirational quote and advise for everybody to listen to.
“Whatever you do in this world full of hate and judgments, always choose to love and respect each other. Thank you. Love you guys!”
