Coming this November 29, OctoArts brings a movie for all genders
It’s a men’s world. Yes, as hard as LGBT members and advocates push through various bills and anti-discrimination propagandas, we still live in a patriarchal society. OctoArts brings back the “Make-up Transformation Queen” on the big screen to reveal this reality in the most entertaining way possible in “Barbi D Wonder Beki.”
What I liked most about the plot of this movie is that it’s not at all pretentious. The setting and characteristics of the cast all mirror the people we interact with every day, our parents, our siblings, friends, and foes. Billy (Paolo Ballesteros) transformed into Barbi when he got caught up in a crime he didn’t commit but circumstances lead to his changing of identity. In his little time as the transgender woman, he found what he really wants and who he really is inside.
The film also touched hearts with Billy’s family dilemma, wherein he’s discriminated and intimidated by his police siblings and his “macho” father, who is constantly against him. It revoked the notion that all men can only succeed by doing masculine works as Barbi just proved otherwise.
I admit at first, I was skeptical about the graphics, but it was actually done with justice. The fight scenes were impressive and it highlighted the power of Barbi, who by the way, gets more stunning every sequence.
Overall, it’s an empowering movie. A 4 out of 5 stars.
