DALY CITY, September 6, 2017 – After speaking at the 8th Anti-Piracy & Content Protection Summit last June in Los Angeles, California, ABS-CBN AVP, General Counsel, Head for Global Anti-Piracy & Content Security Elisha Lawrence goes to the East Coast to speak at the 19th Anti-Counterfeiting & Brand Protection Conference on September 27-29, 2017 in New York City. The event is organized by the International Quality and Productivity Center (IQPC).
Lawrence will speak at two sessions. On September 28, she will join Frank Cullen Jr., executive director of Global Intellectual Property Center U.S. Chamber of Commerce, on the topic, “Effectively Track and Shut Down Online Counterfeiting Rings”. The session will explore:
- Working with Internet access providers, hosting companies and domain registries to guard against cyber-squatting, typo-squatting and SEO manipulation and shutting down fake sites;
- Establishing partnerships with online marketplaces and payment processors to shut down online sales via e-commerce sites with similar look and feel, fake sales on online marketplaces and auction sites;
- How to work with investigators, local and international law enforcement agencies and prosecution partners that specialize in online counterfeiting.
On September 29, Lawrence will speak on “Case Study: ABS-CBN Shuts Down Pirate Sites and Gets the Guilty in Jail by Working Across Cross Border Jurisdictions”. Here, Lawrence will talk about how leading Filipino media and entertainment company ABS-CBN collaborated with the police in Shenzhen, China to arrest the makers of illegally programmed pirate IPTV boxes, how the company’s earlier efforts of working with the likes of the Dubai Department of Economic Development & Intellectual Property Rights Section stopped the online piracy of the Mayweather-Pacquiao world championship boxing match in 2015, and how working with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) led to the arrest of Jonathan Dela Cruz in Bataan, Philippines also in 2015. Dela Cruz created the http://pinoy-tv-replay.com that showed ABS-CBN content illegally (see photo below).
The event will be attended by senior vice presidents, vice presidents, directors and seniors managers of Anti-Counterfeiting, Brand Protection, Brand Management, Investigation, Legal Affairs, Trademark, Corporate Security, Compliance and Enforcement, and Global Security Litigation among others. Lawrence will be among the 20 speakers scheduled to speak at the conference.
Lawrence has over 25 years of experience as in-house Intellectual Property counsel creating and implementing anti-piracy/anti-counterfeiting strategies to mitigate risk and significantly increase sales in the US and globally for leading Fortune 500 organizations such as Levi Strauss, Twentieth Century Fox and Adobe Systems. She also has experience prosecuting criminal cases as a District Attorney for the County of Los Angeles. Lawrence holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and a law degree from UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, CA.
