“Our Ocean, Our Future” — this is the theme for this year’s World Oceans Day.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines has exhibited jaw-dropping underwater photos of multi-awarded photographers Anna Varona and Danny Ocampo at the Lobby Area of Solaire Resorts and Casino for the World Oceans Day.
The exhibit is entitled “Rule of 2/3s” and it showcases a stunning extravaganza that will allow the public to see te beauty of Marine Protected Areas, such as Marine Sanctuary in Tingloy, Batangas; Apo Island in Negros Oriental, Cagayancillo; Tubbataha in Palawan and Tañon Strait in Visayas.
Presented WWF Philippines National Ambassador Marc Nelson, the event was well-attended by guests and friends from the media along several partner representatives from Canon, Solaire and Department of Tourism.
Anna, who is also a responsible tourism advocate and a marine warrior, believes that this endeavor is very timely because it aims to spread awareness on the role of MPAs in long-term food security. She said, “MPAs ensure that our coastal resources are given the chance to regenerate and provide us food now and in the future. Aside from that, our fisherman are given much more stable and sustainable livelihood.”
Danny, who also campaigns for ethical and responsible diving and photography, hopes to influence tourists to be more responsible when they visit MPAs, especially since Apo Island has been instrumental in his journey towards marine conservation work. He shared, “Apo Island continues to inspire not only me but hundreds of individuals, organizations and policymakers here and abroad who have been there. Sadly, its popularity is beginning to be its bane and measures have to be taken to ensure the tourism and conservation complement each other.”
Canon Philippines sponsored the printing of all portraits including the postcard version of some photos. These are up for sale for only P200 each to support the marine conservation efforts of WWF. The “Rule of 2/3s” photo exhibit is open to the public until June 22.
