- They say that behind every successful man is a woman. Perhaps Sen. Tito Sotto’s ‘secret weapon’ is none other than his wife, veteran actress Helen Gamboa.
- Helen could’ve been a bigger actress had she not chosen to marry Sotto back then. But she seemed to have no regrets for choosing love over her career. And ever since, she had always been very supportive of her husband’s endeavors.
- Helen admits she gets hurt when people would bash her husband. But she says she’d rather focus on the good things rather than stress herself with things she cannot control.
If she had her way, veteran actress Helen Gamboa said she does not want to get involved with anything about politics. But obviously, she couldn’t help it because her husband Sen. Tito Sotto is very much into it.
Being highly opinionated, Sotto usually would voice out his opinion on particular matters and netizens would take it against him, thus, he really gets a lot of bashing.
During a recent press conference for her new cooking TV show on a cable channel, Helen was asked about how she felt with the most recent controversy about her husband’s ‘na-ano lang’ statement concerning Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Judy Taguiwalo being a single mom.
According to Helen, she says in as much as possible, she doesn’t want to get involved in anything about politics. She understands that politics is a world in which her husband works. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that she needs to get involved with it as well.
Sotto was lambasted in social media because of saying the word “Na-ano lang,” for single women who had kids without husbands. Helen explains, “Kapag ganoon, hindi ko na binibigyan ng time talaga. Kasi ako lang ang magsa-suffer, ako ang masasaktan. Saka, I should know my husband better than anybody.”
“Kaya I’m so thankful to God na ganito ang pagsasama namin. We always have peace and harmony in our house. Parang nasanay na rin ako na, kapag sa showbiz, parang maraming naninira, maraming naiinggit, kaya I don’t comment na lang,” she adds.
Helen is also thankful for her good health despite her age. At 72, she’s still strong and healthy. “I’m very alright. I feel great. I’m suffering from slipped disc now kaya hindi na ako puwedeng magba-‘Bang-Shang-A-Lang’ na sayaw,” she laughs at her own analysis.
“Medyo may temptations [to dance], pero puwede pa rin naman akong sumayaw. Hindi nga lang ‘yung sobrang magalaw.”
Cooking is her passion, so when her new cooking show was offered to her, she accepted it without hesitation. “I have this passion for cooking, and I got this passion from my mom when she was still with me.”
Bata pa ako noon, she cooks a lot for us, for friends and, heaven knows, she’s really a very good cook. I started out as an actress, a singer. Pero itong cooking really changed my heart noong nag-asawa na ako because I know that a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.
“Kailangan makita ng husband ko na marunong ako ng pagluluto and other household chores. And when Perci (Intalan), offered me about this kind of show, I really got so interested, so From Helen’s Kitchen was born.”
Among the roster of guests lined up for her cooking show would be Maricel Soriano, Carmina Villaroel, Eric Quizon, Pops Fernandez, Albert Martinez, Raymart Santiago, Ruby Rodriguez, Gladys Reyes, Donita Rose, Pauleen Luna-Sotto and many more.
Catch Helen’s cooking show beginning July 1, 8PM on Colours in Cignal TV.
