Primetime King Coco Martin is set to do the remake of the classic fantasy movie titled “Panday.”
In a picture uploaded on Instagram, Coco Martin was photographed with Comics King & director Carlo J. Caparas with caption: “Comics King & director Carlo J. Caparas granted the King of Television and Cinema @mr.cocomartin the rights of the movie Panday, which @mr.cocomartin will topbill and direct, and pitch as an entry to the upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival 2017.”
“Panday’s” first live action adaptation from its original comic book roots was with the film of the same name starring the late Fernando Poe Jr. in 1980. This was followed by “Ang Pagbabalik ng Panday” (1981) (The Return of the Blacksmith), “Ang Panday: Ikatlong Yugto” (1982) (The Blacksmith: Third Chapter), and “Ang Panday IV: Ika-Apat na Aklat” (1984) (The Blacksmith IV: Fourth Book).
Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. picked up where FPJ left, continuing the “Panday” films with “Ang Dugo ng Panday” (1993) (‘The Blood of the Blacksmith‘) and “Ang Hiwaga ng Panday” (1998) (The Mystery of the Blacksmith).
ABS-CBN then adapted Caparas’ iconic fantasy superhero into a two-season fantaserye starring Jerciho Rosales as the iconic Flavio with “Panday: Unang Yugto” which aired on November 7 to December 9, 2005, followed by the second season “Panday: Ang Ikalawang Yugto” which ran from April 3 to May 26, 2006.
Ang Panday was again adapted into two films by Imus Productions and GMA Films with “Ang Panday” (2009), the official entry to the 35th Metro Manila Film Festival, and “Ang Panday 2” (2011) at the 37th Metro Manila Film Festival starring Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr.
Last year, “Panday” was again adapted by TV5 for television with Richard Gutierrez on the lead role.
For this year, Star Cinema will try to submit “Panday” as their entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF 2017). Goodluck Coco!
