Like most of us, Geca Morales was an ordinary girl who used to cover hits songs. She had been uploading her videos on YouTube and constantly joining singing competitions. Until one day, her life turned upside down.
The beginning
She joined Center for Pop Music Philippines and went on training under the best vocal coaches. She eventually participated on its Voice Recording Excellence competition where she finished first runner-up.
Geca then joined bigger and more prestigious competitions such as GawaMusika in 2016, where she won the Outstanding Performer Award. That same year, she was named Senior Solo Vocalist for Team Philippines at the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in California. WCOPA is being considered as the first and only global “Talent Olympics.” It is the same competition where renowned singer Jed Madela was discovered.
The singer from Manila bested other 50 contestant and won the coveted gold medal in the Female Vocal Rap category. As for the category of Female Vocal Rock, Geca managed to get the silver one.
Geca as an artist
In her interview with LionhearTV at Books & Borders Café on 28 March, Geca recollected how she became the very first artist of Penser Q Talents.
She revealed it was her aunt who invited her to perform in a charity concert.
“Actually, para s’yang blessing in disguise kasi may [private message] sa’kin ‘yung tita ko. Sabi n’ya sa’kin, ‘Pwede ka bang mag-perform for free? It’s a charity concert.’ For a cause daw ‘yung event. Tapos ako, nagdadalawang isip ako if I’ll take it kasi [the concert] will fall on the weekday and kailangan kong mag-leave sa office,” she recalled.
Geca also said the event caused a major dilemma for her. She elaborated,“Nag-iisa lang ang leave ko. So it’s my choice kung a-attend ako sa fund raising na ‘to o gamitin ko na lang ‘yung leave ko sa Christmas vacation or my family. Parang may nag-push lang talaga sa’kin na, ‘Sige na nga, it’s for a good cause naman. Sige, I’ll sing for the event.’”
As she went to the venue where she would be performing, Geca learned that she was the front act of a super band from the 70s.
She then remembered how the Jeff Paulino approached her after her performance. “After ko pong mag-perform du’n sa concert, pagbaba ko po ng stage, sinalubong po agad ako ni sir Jeff at sinabi n’ya sa akin, ‘Ang galing! Ang galing sobra. D’yan ka lang, kausapin kita mamaya ha?’
“So after po nu’n, nagpa-set up na po s’ya ng meeting then after two days, nag-meeting na po kami. Marami na po silang na-propose na plan for me.
“Gusto po nila, ako po ‘yung first artist nila. So, sobrang thankful po talaga and blessing in disguise na na-meet ko po sila.”
How does she feel now that she’s a certified recording artist?
“Well, actually, ang sarap n’ya sa pakiramdam. Kasi before, nag-a-upload lang ako ng mga covers sa YouTube, sa Soundcloud, sa Facebook. Tapos ngayon… nase-search ko na ‘yung name ko sa Spotify. Parang napakasarap sa feeling na singer na talaga ako,” she said.
Achieving our dreams requires determination and a lot of efforts to succeed. Like Geca, you can also become the person you want as long as you hold onto your dreams and use it in right moments.
