On March 1, many netizens took to Twitter and Facebook to oppose the Death Penalty Bill that passed on second reading. The hashtag #NoToDeathPenalty generated more than 13 thousand tweets and had become the third most-talked about topic in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Duterte supporters expressed their excitement on the said bill by using the hashtag #YesToDeathPenalty. However, it was not as popular as the former since the president’s supporters used to clamor on Facebook. Thus, it failed to generate a lot of tweets.

On February 27, CNN Philippines reported that rape, treason and plunder were removed from the list of crimes that are punishable by Death Penalty Bill. Many people eventually raises their eyebrows, believing that something’s fishy going on inside the government.
