February 17, 2017 (Quezon City, Philippines) – A state of calamity has been declared by the Mayor of Surigao City. Relief and rescue operations are underway for the barangays that have been affected.
Damage to infrastructure and properties caused by the quake will most likely reach P1 billion according to the Philippine Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
As of this writing, the number of casualties stand at 8 with more than 200 injured. The earthquake affected 60 barangays, 1,790 families and 9,320 individuals.
The “red alert” status has been maintained by the Caraga Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management (RDRRMC).
