ABS-CBN News draws flak from netizens, especially KathNiel fans, after they mistakenly cited director Cathy Garcia-Molina as the director behind KathNiel’s “Barcelona: A Love Untold,” which was actually directed by director Olivia Lamasan.
Netizens and bloggers couldn’t help but to expressed their disappointment over the false information.
Renowned blogger Rod Magaru tagged Star Cinema’s official Twitter page and requested the movie outlet to check ABS-CBN News’ confusing article.
Fans also stressed the inconsistency of ABS-CBN News when it comes to updating some films’ ticket sales. They also accused the news organization of being biased towards LizQuen.
However, there are also some fans that are jumping into this “hate bandwagon” without thinking twice on what they were posting. In layman’s term, these fans are the “memas” or “memasabi lang.”
However, reading beyond the lines will help us understand that these “inconsistent reports” are quite true.
Take note that Star Cinema, Viva Films, GMA Films and other movie outlets were sometimes using ordinal numbers, especially in monitoring their films’ ticket sales. Ordinal Numbers— when used in a sentence can mean different things—are numbers that tell the position of something in a list, such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
Examples:
1. CORRECT: The ghostwriter reported that “My Ex and Whys” grossed more than 100 million after just 3 days since its premiere.
The LizQuen film premiered on February 15 in the morning. So technically, the counting of ticket sales would also end in February 16 in the morning—that means 24 hours have passed. Hence, the day ending in February 17 was the second day while February 18 was the third day. So he wrote “3 days since its premiere.”
2. CORRECT: ABS-CBN News may also report that “My Ex and Whys” grossed more than 100 million on its fourth day.
The film premiered on February 15—the first day of showing. So, the date of February 16 was the second day of showing and so forth. However, we cannot say that “My Ex and Whys” grossed more than 100 million in span of 4 days because “a day” can be considered a day if it is consist of hours.
Therefore, these headlines are technically correct:
- “‘My Ex and Whys’ grossed more than 100 million on its fourth day.”
- “‘My Ex and Whys’ grossed more than 100 million just after 3 days.”
3. INCORRECT: “Barcelona: A Love Untold” earned 130 million in 5 days.
The KathNiel film grossed more than 100 million in just 4 days because it was premiered on 14 September 2016. Again, we need to wait 24 hours to mark it as one day. So technically, the actual counting of ticket sales should have ended on September 15, which means 24 hours have passed. Therefore, September 16 was the second day and so forth.
ABS-CBN News should have reported that “Barcelona” crossed the 100 million mark in just 4 days or on its fifth day.
It was also explained by an anonymous fan on Facebook. He wrote:
Natawa naman ako dun sa mga nagre-react na mali daw yung article ng ABS-CBN na kumita ng 100 million ang “My Ex and Whys” sa loob ng 3 days. Di raw kasi 3 days yon kundi 4 DAYS!
Ang logic nila, February 15, 16, 17 at 18 e considered as 4 DAYS.
February 15 to 16 (24 hours na ang lumipas; counted as first day)
February 16 to 17 (lumipas ulit ang 24 hours; 2nd day na mga bes)
February 17 to 18 (again, lumipas ulit ang 24 hours; pang-3rd day nila)So 3 days lang. Di na talaga marunong magbilang? Jusko. Saan yung mali dun? Anong pinaglalaban ng ibang “smart-ass” jejemons dyan sa tabi-tabi aber?
In short… would you consider yourself as a 1-year-old in the year you were born?
ABS-CBN News has yet to speak on the issue.
