A gay-themed Smart’s advertisement is causing a stir, and has received “mostly positive” feedback from the netizens especially those who are members of LGBT.

Smart Breaking Barriers

The advertisement, which uses the slogan “Welcome Change”, was meant to “break barriers for new beginnings” according to the ad.

The ad opens with a closeted son named Kevin receiving a friend request from his retired military dad. During their family lunch, the father reminded him, “Kevin, bakit hindi mo pa inaaccept ang friend request ko?”

Smart Breaking Barriers

Browsing his Facebook account with photos of his lover on the phone, he replied to his dad, “Dad, inaccept na kita.”

His dad’s reply is the sweetest, “Ako din.”

According to The Dailypedia, a study conducted by Laylo Research Strategies (LRS) found that 70% percent of respondents strongly disagree of same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, our new president-elect Rodrigo Duterte expressed his support for the LGBT community during his campaign and would consider legalizing same-sex marriage and allowing LGBT people to serve in the military.

Same-sex marriages are now legal in 17 countries as well as in some jurisdictions within the United States and Mexico. Needless to say, the Filipino LGBT community is keenly observing what might happen next overseas, with the hope that someday, similar progress can be achieved here.
