Veteran Filipino actress Jaclyn Jose won Best Actress at the 69th Cannes Film Festival for her role as a mother forced to sell drugs to survive in Brillante Mendoza’s “Ma’ Rosa.”
Surprised by her Best Actress award, a tearful Jaclyn said, “Who would not get emotional? This is the Cannes film festival. This is big, I mean especially in my country. Not anyone can be in [this] competition or be nominated as best actress. This is big in my country right now.”
Jaclyn now joins the ranks of past winners including Juliette Binoche, Kirsten Dunst, Sophia Loren, Julianne Moore, Katherine Hepburn and Meryl Streep. She bested celebrated actors Charlize Theron (US entry “The Last Face” directed by Sean Penn) and Marion Cotillard (France’s “Mal de Pierres” / “From the Land of the Moon” directed by Nicole Garcia).
Jaclyn now holds the record of the very first from Southeast Asia to win the best actress award at Cannes.
