UNA Senatorial candidate Alma Moreno joined the fray and gave her opinion regarding the controversial statement of Manny Pacquiao on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.
Alma and Pacquiao are both running under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) party of presidential candidate VP Jejomar Binay. But Alma did not hesitate in opposing Pacquiao’s description of same-sex unions as “worse than animals”.
Conveying her opinion in a text message sent to Inquirer.net written by Marc Jayson Cayabyab on February 18, 2016. Alma said she respects Pacquaio for bringing honor to the country and for his being a good human being and Christian. However, she disagrees with the congressman’s anti-gay statement comparing gay people to animals.
The former actress said “Whatever ang ating personal na paniniwala, di ito dapat maging basehan para insultuhin ang kapwa.
We are accountable only for our own actions. “(Whatever our personal beliefs are, these shouldn’t be the bases to insult others.)
The actress explained that she knows a lot of gay people, who are decent, who are honest taxpayers and who have contributed a lot to diferrent fields.
Pacquiao was slammed not only by the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community but also by local and international celebrities and personalities. Vice Ganda, Boy Abunda, Perez Hilton, Magic Johnson, and even Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum voiced their criticism of Pacquiao’s homophobic comments.
One of Pacquiao’s biggest sponsors, Nike, cut short their ties with him. Nike found the boxer’s anti-gay comments, “abhorrent”.
Though Manny issued an apology for the reprehensible comparison, he nevertheless stands firm in his belief that same-sex marriage should not be allowed.
