Aljur Abrenica plays the lead role in the Gil Portes directed historical biopic, “Hermano Puli”. Initially slated to be an official entry to the 41st Metro Manila Film Festival last December 25, 2015, was eventually pulled out from the official entries because of budget limitations.
Hermano Puli will soon wrap up shooting in Tayabas, Quezon.
GMA Network staff has nothing else to say but praises for Aljur’s dedication and passion in bringing Hermano Puli’s (Apolinario De la Cruz) character to life in the biopic. The leading man of GMA Network’s morning soap, “Dangwa” has also been working with his two younger brothers on the film, Vin and Allen Abrenica.
Just like any family in showbiz, it can’t be helped when people compare family members to each other. Such is the case with the two Abrenica siblings who both owe their break from reality talent search; with Aljur having the first break in show business via Starstruck. To Vin Abrenica’s credit, he has been building a name for himself ever since winning the best actor (opposite to Sophie Alberts) in TV5’s Artist Academy back in 2012.
When asked about what Aljur thinks of his brothers and the possible competition they might pose to him, he is all smiles when he answered, “Itong film na ito, hindi lang siya para sa akin, kundi para sa pamilya. Hindi lang ito para kay Hermano Puli, kundi para sa pamilya, kasi, kasama ko rito sina Vin at si Allen. Parang Christmas gift ko to sa kanila, eh.” (“This film is not just for me but for the family. This is not just for Hermano Puli, but for the family as well as I am with Vin and Allen. It’s like my Christmas gift for them.”)
“Hermano Puli” chronicles the martyrdom of the early 19th-century religious leader Apolinario de la Cruz who later be called “Hermano Puli” and the Catholic lay brotherhood he founded in 1832, the “Confradia de San Jose”; and his fight for religious freedom from the monopoly, exclusivity, and corruption of the oppressive Spanish friars. There is still no official release date announcement for “Hermano Puli.”
Amidst the passion observed from Aljur abrenica in “Hermano Puli”, the big question now is can he bring the same level of intensity or can the Gil Portes biopic even come close to the level excellence seen from 2015’s popular historical biopic, “Heneral Luna”?
