“My Husband’s Lover” (2013)
GMA Network gave the Philippines its first-ever LGBT tv series through “My Husband’s Lover”. Starring Dennis Trillo, Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana, the series became one of the hottest shows in 2013.
The series is about a family man who is a closeted gay and has an affair with his ex-lover. The unusual story of love and infidelity was top-rater in Mega Manila and was a social media sensation, becoming a trending topic on Twitter for most of its 94 episodes which aired from June 10, 2013 to October 18, 2013.
The teleserye was shown in Vietnam, one of the few Filipino soap operas that aired outside of the Philippines.
Its controversial and sensitive theme was closely monitored by MTRCB and scrutinized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Youth.
The series won critical acclaim and garnered awards and nominations from local award giving bodies including Best Ensemble Performance at the 12th Gawad Tanglaw Awards, Outstanding Original Drama Program at the 5th Golden Screen TV Awards, and TV Show of the Year on Primetime at The PEP List 2013 Editors’ Choice Awards.
The lead stars of the the teleserye were also cited for their exemplary performances. Dennis Trillo was Highly Commended as Best Actor in a Lead Role while Dominic Zapata was nominated for Best Direction at the 19th Asian Television Awards.
