Pia Wurtzbach is the country’s representative to the upcoming “64th Miss Universe” pageant which will be held on December 20 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The multi-talented beauty of Filipino-German descent will compete for the crown of what is considered the most prestigious among all beauty pageants.
Pia is one of the 80 contestants vying for the title of “Miss Universe”. Already, reports and photos on PhilStar show how our “Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2015” sizzled in her glamorous gowns, casual ensembles, and swimwear in pre-pageant events.
But what Filipinos are watching out for is what she will wear as national costume. Last year, the national costume worn by then “Miss Universe” contestant Mary Jean (MJ) Lastimosa, was panned by netizens and fashion critics. The Panagbenga-inspired costume was designed by Colombian Alfredo Barraza.
This year, the Bb. Pilipinas organization decided to use the works of Filipino designers, not only for “Miss Universe” but also for “Miss Intercontinental”. This brought jubilation to all Filipinos, especially pageant enthusiasts. One Filipina was particularly happy about it. In a recent interview with the author, MJ herself, shared the good news.
Answering a question about the national costume, MJ simply said, “I heard it will be designed by a Filipino designer”. Then, like someone who won the lottery, she raised both arms in the air, and cheered “Yehey” .
Alluding to the national costume issue, she explained that she did her best to present herself, to be confident regardless of what she was wearing.
MJ believes that Pia will be one of the top 15 contenders for this year’s “Miss Universe”. She said that Pia is very competitive and is a bit of a perfectionist. “Talagang inaaral nya yung sarili nya, kung ano mali at i cocorrect nya yun.” (She really studies herself, her mistakes, and she corrects it)
Though there are no detalis yet as to the who among the top Filipino designers made Pia’s national costume and how it would look like, Filipinos are already excited to show their love and support for the country’s “Miss Universe 2015” contestant. According to MJ, it is this overwhelming support of the Filipinos that makes our contestants stand out. That glowing aura of any Filipina candidate reflects the love that they get from their fellow countrymen.
MJ advises future aspirants to Bb. Pilipinas not to be pressured in going after the crown but to just “embrace the moment”. She said that a lot of things can happen just by joining the pageant. Even if one loses, a lot of the contestants become successful in their respective crafts.
