After PDP-Laban officially proclaimed Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as their presidential candidate for the 2016 elections, he revealed that he has two wives and two girlfriends, and is not ashamed about it.
He minced no words in saying the truth about his personal relationships. He said, “May asawa ako, may pangalawang asawa ako….Dalawa ang girlfriend ko” (I have a wife, I have a second wife…I have two girlfriends.) He said people should know everything about him if they want him to be their President.
His pronouncements about his being a womanizer, aside from his other statements during that no-holds barred speech, have become highly controversial. A lot of people have expressed their disapproval on social media.
One of them is singer-songwriter Kitchie Nadal who wrote her opinion on Facebook. Kitchie said that womanizing “has to be condemned and not condoned”. She said that everyone should follow and uphold marital laws just like criminal laws because violating them would induce “social chaos”.
Towards the end of her post, Kitchie addressed her appeal to Duterte. She said if the Mayor cannot follow these marital laws for his family, he should at least respect and uphold them for the sake of the families in the country.
She added that he should do this as much as he wants the people to “sacrifice and respect other laws you are upholding no matter how hard it will be for many.”
Netizens gave mixed reactions to her post. Pro-Duterte voters commented that at least, Duterte is honest about his being a womanizer, unlike other political leaders who hide their several mistresses from the public eye. Others agreed readily with Kitchie’s point of view and said they would rather vote for other candidates than go for an admitted womanizer like him.
Kitchie is not the only celebrity who had negative reactions to Duterte’s speech. Jim Paredes and Gab Valenciano had also posted their negative sentiments about his controversial speech.
