Our country’s bet , highly acclaimed historical film “Heneral Luna” for the 2016 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film category of the 73rd Oscar’s, failed to be selected as one of the nominees.
73rd Oscar award is handed out annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to full-length feature films produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue.
“General Luna” was chosen by the Committee of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP), which is headed by film makers Mel Chionglo, its members are actors Lorna Tolentino and Michael de Mesa, cinematographer Lee Meiley, directors Joe Carreon and Boy Vinarao, and academician Rolando Tolentino.
Competing for the title for ‘2016 Best Foreign Language Film’ category are 74 foreign film entries that are from 46 countries.
The Foreign Language Film Award Committee review the submitted films and selected the final 9 entries before officially naming the final 5 nominees. The final five nominated entries will be released to the press a week before the official announcement of nominations on the 14th of January 2016, while the Oscar Awards event will be on February 28, 2016.
Celebrated movies from major film festivals such as Toronto, Berlin and Cannes were mainly the many foreign films winners and nominees at The Oscars.
A research done by a news agency showed that there are also other award giving bodies that snubbed “Heneral Luna” namely, the Los Angeles Film Critics Circle, New York Film Critics Circle, and the National Board of Review.
The film “Heneral Luna” is a historical film about General Antonio Luna who led the fight against Spanish colonizers under the revolutionary government of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo.
