Dubsmash Queen of the Philippines, Yaya Dub, “GL” o “ganda lang”, Divina Ursula Bukbukova Smash are just some of the names or aliases attributed to her. But in real life, her name is Nicomaine Dei Capili Mendoza, also known as Maine Mendoza in showbiz, born on March 3, 1995 in Tubong Bayan, Sta. Maria, Bulacan.
Finished her highschool in St. Paul College. She’s the 4th of 5 children in the family, got 2 sisters and 2 brothers. She took up Culinary Arts from De La Salle College of St. Benilde because according to her, she wanted to learn how to cook.
Here are some known and unknown facts about Yaya Dub:
1. While still in college, she’s so fond of making different facial expressions, edit her own pictures and videos, and that led her to like the app Dubsmash.
Her 1st ever dubsmash Video, done when she was just 17 years old. was uploaded on April 29, 2012.
2. The first Dubsmash collection she uploaded in her Facebook last April 22 gained 1 million views in 24 hours, which eventually led to her first TV appearance (July 4, 2015) playing “yaya” to Wally Bayola’s “Juan For All, All For Juan” segment in Eat Bulaga.
3. Her “Secret Ultimate Dream” is for her to become an actress, but was afraid to tell anyone as they could just laugh at her and think it’s an impossible dream because she doesn’t have any talents to show, and she’s so thankful now that she was discovered because of her dubsmash video.
4. As a child, Maine was very quiet and shy. A Total opposite to her character as Yaya Dub. She describe herself as a really quiet person specially off-cam.
In an interview, her parents also said that growing up Menggay (Maine’s nickname) is quiet because she’s afraid to be around people. She’s funny and wacky when she’s with her siblings. They play around, scream when they’re the only ones together.
Even her hairstylist Celeste Tuviera, who has been fixing Maines hair for commercias and photoshoots attests that Maine is a quiet girl, but changes in front of the camera.
5. She’s quite a foodie. Since she is a Culinary Arts Graduate , she loves and wanted to learn how to cook, it’s quite obvious that she’s a food lover.
In her character as Yaya Dub, there are scenes where she would eat isaw (specifically the intestines of chicken), all types of street food, sinigang nabangus with lots of kangkong, lasagna. And she loves spicy food, pepperoni pizza, frozen yogurt, fresh juice and more.
6. Maine loves MAC lipstick. The red lipstick she wears on the Kalyeserye on TV became very famous. It was even reported that the MAC’s Rudy Woo lipstick was sold out after makeup artist Krist Bansuelo said that he used the color in one of his makeup sessions with her.
7. Yaya Dub has been blogging since 2011. She started her personal blog back in August 2011, when she was still a college freshman. She started her blog using the free platform (WordPress.com) using the domain thepessimisticoptimistbella.wordpress.com.
In April 2015, she eventually switched to self-hosting at WordPress.org and used her name as the domain name – mainemendoza.com (but still with the Blog name Pessimistic Optimistic Bella.
8. She can write using left hand and right hand. When asked at Ask.fm, if she is left-handed or right handed? Maine answered that she is right-handed. However, some fans say she is left-handed just like Alden Richards.
She used her left hand when she was writing on her card to Alden while he was singing “God Gave Me You.”But if you are a keen observer, you will notice that she can write using left hand and right hand.
9. Maine Mendoza loves to write poems. Yes, Maine also writes poems. Among the long list of poems she wrote and posted on her blog include ‘Frustrated Poet’, ’23rd of June’, ‘Eventually’, ‘Blues’, ‘Just A Dream’, ‘For She Was Already Hurt’, ‘Noon Blues’, and ’20 Things I Hate About You (10 Things I Hate About You Revised). However, her ‘Til Next Time, Love’ appears to talk about her heartache.
10. Some asked, how is Maine behind the camera?
Last Oct 19, in the location shoot of Juan for All, she refused to be given special treatments, when it was time to have their meals, Maine went out of her tent, and get her own food, even though she can ask the staff who’ll be more glad to do it for her. This was shared by one of her followers/fan in Instagram, attached photo of the post.
And on the same day, after the “Juan For All” shoot, when all the casts – Wally, Jose and Paolo including Maine, were already in their vehicles, suddenly a little girl came out of nowhere and she was crying and holding onto a ballpen and small piece of paper, when asked why she was crying, she said she just wanted to see Yaya Dub and get her autograph.
One of the personal bodyguards of Maine approached her car and told her what was happening, immediately Maine came out of her vehicle, approached the little girl, granted her wish and sign the autograph and as bonus Maine even embraced the little girl and asked her if she wanted a picture taken with her. The little girl continued to cry, but this time it was out of her happiness and the kindness that Maine showed her.
Inspite of her big success and popularity, Maine has remained humble, sweet and simple, many young stars in the business can learn a lot from her. That even all of the fame, fortune, power, and stardom, one can still keep her feet on the ground.
