AlDub was featured on Oct. 28, 2015, in the BBC News-Asia website, as reported by Heather Chen, ‘AlDub’ is a social media phenomenon about love and lip-synching, being in love with somebody you have never met and how to break records on Twitter.
She further enthused ”that it is a surreal and wildly popular show which has smashed global social media records. But few outside the Philippines have even heard of the phenomenon called AlDub.
Eat Bulaga was also mentioned in the news, and how viewers across the Philippines made sure they’re tuned in to watch the popular afternoon show. And described further that “AlDub” is a play on the first name of Filipino Actors Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza (who plays the character Yaya Dub on the show).
The Oct. 24, 2015 show in the Arena, aptly called by the reported as “and then they finally met”, was set on a huge charity concert celebrating the show’s 36th anniversary. And she decribed how thousands attended the event and in just one day, the hashtag #AlDubEBTamangPanahon drew more that 41 million tweets, beating the previous Twitter record held by Brazil’s 2014 Fifa World Cup defeat to Germany.
The formula behind the phenomenon, as TV Host and blogger Daphne Osena Paez explained the difference about AlDub is that it wasn’t just the creation of a TV Network, it all began in live TV and they started reacting to each other spontaneously.
Heather Chen added that the other key to their popularity is their ability to connect with ordinary people, and stayed humble inspite of their big success. Another BBC presenter Rico Hizon admits to being a huge fan of the series.
Maine Mendoza’s skillful lip-synching, according to her, made her an internet celebrity and now known as the “Dubsmash Queen”, and even mentioned that along with Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, Maine has one of the fastest growing followings on Twitter, making her the third fastest growing celebrity on Twitter.
Indeed the popularity of AlDub has made quite a stir in the world, even the Twitter Executive Rishi Jaitly said “It’s a global phenomenon”.
