While many spent their Valentine’s day on dinner dates or singles’ night out, thousands of Filipinos flocked to Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City to listen to the melodic rock of the American band Boyce Avenue.
Composed of Puerto Rican brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano, the amazing trio brought down the house with original and cover songs that earned them more than 6 million subscribers on Youtube and made them the most streamed international artist in the Philippines.
We’ve rounded up 8 reasons why spending Valentine’s day with the boys was truly worth it.
1. More than a Cover Band– Boyce Avenue, which came together in 2004, became a household name for doing amazing covers, but their original songs Speed Limit, Find Me, Change your Mind, and On My Way which they performed in front of Pinoy fans truly showed the heart and soul of their band.
2. Raw Talent and Pure Energy– With their soulful performance of ballad, rock, and alternative songs, you’d actually think that the three brothers spent all their life training to become the most popular independent band in the world. It’s actually hard to believe that the three brothers prioritised pursuing higher education before forming Boyce Avenue. Unlike other artists who usually take breaks during concerts, Boyce Avenue sang all their 15 songs straight!
3. Biggest Audience– Although it was already their fourth local appearance in six years, last night’s crowd in Manila was actually the biggest. Smart Araneta Coliseum was almost filled with eager fans including celebrities and personalities like comedian Vice Ganda, collegiate basketball player Jeron Teng, Kapamilya actress Jane Oineza, and fashion designer Paul Cabral. Surprisingly, Senator Pia Cayetano also chose to spend her Valentine’s day with Boyce Avenue.
4. Awesome Crowd Interaction – One of the highlights of Boyce Avenue’s Valentine concert in Manila was their amazing interaction with the crowd. Alejandro kept his audience entertained by making them sing and clap in several portions of the concert. Now that’s one proactive crowd.
5. Winning the Hearts of Pinays– We all know that a sure way to win a Filipina’s heart is to serenade her. This is exactly what Boyce Avenue did when they called up a female fan up on stage. We don’t know if she’s single or not, but we’re 100% sure the boys won her heart when they serenaded her their original song Find Me. The lucky lady also got to take a selfie with the band too!
6. Close to Pinoys’ Hearts– Pinoys undeniably have one of the closest family ties among different cultures in the world. During the concert, Boyce Avenue proved that they do share this quality with Filipinos. Alejandro, the band’s lead vocals, put his brothers on the spotlight in several moments in the show.
7. Epic Covers– With the ability to transform a variety of songs into their own, Boyce Avenue effortlessly covered Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, Neyo’s Because of You , One Direction’s Story of My Life, Bruno Mars’ Locked out of Heaven and Coldplay’s Fix You during their concert in Manila.
8. Love Advice for Singles – Since more than half of the audience were single, Alejandro didn’t forget to give them love advice on Valentine’s day. So what exactly did he tell them? He actually gave them hope through their original song “On My Way”.
