Show business is a highly competitive field that actors and actresses can come and go when the public don’t like them.
However, there were those who, just like in The Hunger Games, had the odds in their favor this 2013. Thus, here are the Filipino celebrities who made a huge splash this year. While this list is in no particular order, for sure these showbiz figures found much order to their careers.
Vice Ganda
To say that Jose Marie Borja Viceral’s year is beautiful is an understatement. While he continues to appear in “It’s Showtime” and “Gandang Gabi Vice”, he has also appeared in movies such as “Bromance” and the Metro Manila Film Fest entry “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy”. He also released a self-titled album under Star Records.
He also won all but one of the 13 nominations from various award-giving bodies including the Star Awards for Television, the Box Office Entertainment Awards and the Yahoo! OMG Awards. While he was involved in a case of a bad joke with GMA 7 News Director and TV host Jessica Soho, his year still turned out to be pretty well and he has already offered his apology for the said controversy.
Team Kramer
They may not be showbiz’ first family but they have the genes to be just that. By the latter part of the year, the family of PBA player Doug Kramer and actress Cheska Garcia gained a lot of social media interest which translated into TV appearances, event invites and endorsements. Essentially, Doug and Cheska captured the daily antics of the daughters Kendra and Scarlett as well as son Gavin to the delight of their followers. With their popularity on the rise, expect more from this family in 2014.
Beauty contest winners
The Philippines dominated the international beauty pageant scene this year due to victories by Megan Young as Miss World, Mutya Datul as Miss Supranational and Bea Rose Santiago as Miss International and just before the year ends, Angeli Dione Gomez from Cebu was crowned as Miss Tourism International 2013. Maria Isabelle Mendoza also won Miss Campus World while Amber delos Reyes bagged the Miss Teen Expoworld Universe. Meanwhile, Miss Universe candidate Ariella Arida garnered a third-runner-up finish.
Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo
While they had separate avenues of success this year, it’s best to put them as one entry. After all, it was their partnership that attracted other successes. Early in the year, they would star in movie “Must Be… Love”. Their chemistry was then translated into the primetime television series “Got to Believe” in the second half of 2013. Together, they will star in the movie “Pagpag” which will be a part of the Metro Manila Film Festival.
Meanwhile, Padilla’s self-titled album was hailed as the Best Selling Album of the year during the 2013 Awit Awards. To her credit, Bernardo scored a few endorsements particularly from Surf and Juicy Cologne.
Rocco Nacino
This Starstruck avenger will never forget 2013 due to the major roles that he scored in the big screen and on the boob tube. The registered nurse appeared in movies “I Luv U, Pare Ko”, “My Lady Boss” and the lead role in “Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir”. On TV, he is part of “Unforgettable”, “Akin Pa Rin ang Bukas” and GMA News TV’s “Bayan Ko” and “Titser”. Nacino is also chosen as the host of “Out of Control”. By the way, he’s also part of “Bubble Gang” too.
Jessy Mendiola
To say the least, Jessy Mendiola’s career this year is spicy. She scored a big endorsement with McDonalds and her success translated into her first television series lead role in the remake of “Maria Mercedes” and a role in the Star Cinema flick “Call Center Girl”. She also graced the covers of Metro Magazine, Meg Magazine, Men’s Health, Cosmopolitan Philippines, Preview and Esquire. With her showbiz run on the rise, expect more flavor from her acting and modelling prowess into next year.
