A lot of people were very curious at how a prequel of the Kimmy Dora series would be handled. While the sheer talent of the lead actress is really enough for the movie to entertain, there were glaring technicalities in the movie that made it inconsistent with its ‘Kiyemeng Prequel’ title.
The Plot
The movie starts with Kimmy and Dora Go Dong Hae (as portrayed by Eugene Domingo) after graduating from school. Luisito (as played by Ariel Ureta) asks them to join their company at entry level position. They were immersed to various jobs in the company in order to learn the ropes of the business.
In the middle of the movie, a terrorist named, Bogart, plans to sabotage the business of the Go Dong Hae group. Like the past Kimmy Dora movies, the two had to get along in order to stop him from his evil plans.
The Concept
Attempting or a sci-fi thriller theme, the movie was packed with high-tech gears and villain plots which seemed to be a bit corny and trying hard. The filmmakers know that if they’d take away the goofy elements in most parts of the movie, it wouldn’t be so appealing to the audience. But the point is, why use sci-fi thriller theme to begin with? It just doesn’t make any sense.
The Missing Angle
Using Candy Crush Saga reference isn’t logical. The movie banked on its emotional arc throughout that it became a bit inconsistent with the comedic film we all used to love.
Aside from that, there’s nothing new with the portrayal of the two sisters. It would have been better if we had known how Kimmy acquired his stern and mean attitude. It would also be interesting to see how the two really act before as sisters.
The biggest mistake of the film is that they forgot about the capabilities of their very strong cast. There’s so much talent gone to waste with Angel Aquino, Joel Torre and Sam Milby as supporting cast.
The Good Side
If it weren’t for the talent and versatility Eugene Domingo has shown in the movie, it would have been a complete let down. It’s also notable that they tried motion controlled compositing, which is kind of amazing to watch.
For everyone, it might be that Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel is the first movie on their list to watch. But to be honest, it was so disappointing given that their sequels were very successful. For someone who wants a fun movie to watch, sure it’s effective – but it’s still the typical Kimmy Dora movie, without progression from the past of its sequels. I’d rather have a Kimmy Dora 1 and 2 marathon than to watch this film, to be frank.
