Opening at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City this Friday, the best-of-seven series will see the Petron Blaze Boosters colliding with the San Mig Coffee Mixers for the first time since the 2000 Governor’s Cup Finals when they were still known as Purefoods TJ Hotdogs and San Miguel Beermen.
The Blaze Boosters return to the Governors Cup Finals, having last won in 2011 where they defeated the Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters in an epic seven game series. With Gee Abanilla as the team’s new coach this conference, the Blaze Boosters racked up 11 straight wins en route to the final battle. While Blaze Boosters import Elijah Millsap has been the x-factor for the team in this campaign, local support has also been steady with the likes of rookie June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot and Best Player of the Conference candidate Arwind Santos, who’s averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds per game.
The San Mig Coffee Mixers finally surpassed the challenges presented this season and booked a seat in a conference finals. Prolific import Marquis Blakely is looking to reclaim the team’s glory after they lost in the championship series to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters last year. James Yap has been bringing an all-around game by providing his steady defense and outstanding scoring. Alex Mallari and Mark Barroca have provided on-court leadership as well. Add to the bunch Gilas Pilipinas stalwart Marc Pingris whose presence adds toughness to the team.
“The PLDT TELPAD PBA Governor’s Cup Finals on TV5 will allow us to broadcast the games to a wider reach nationwide and with clearer broadcast quality. Filipinos love watching basketball and we saw that during the recent 2013 FIBA Asia Championship on TV5. This is a great way to thank the fans for their support to our broadcast last August,” said Sports5 Head Chot Reyes.
The PLDT TELPAD Governor’s Cup Finals will also have a simulcast on AksyonTV (on Free TV – Channel 41 in Metro Manila, Channel 29 in Metro Cebu and Davao; on cable and satellite television – Channel 1 on CIGNAL Digital TV, Channel 85 on SkyCable Digibox, Channel 78 on Destiny Cable) and live streaming on News5 Everywehere (n5e.interaksyon.com).
Encore Telecast of the games is available on HYPER, the 24/7 sports channel nationwide.
