Maritess never thought something would go wrong the time she delivered her third baby. This is why it came as such a shock to her that she gave birth to a young boy Unico, who is not only deaf and mute, but also doesn’t have legs.
“They hid my child from me. I couldn’t move. They told me not to be shocked when I see my child’s deformity,” recounted Maritess.
Despite Unico’s condition, he grew up to become a diligent student, a good son, and an excellent athlete. But looking back, Maritess couldn’t think of any other reason to explain why Unico turned out the way he is now but with the way she passed the “paglilihi” stage, when she was fond of reading horror comic books and playing with little crabs.
Should Maritess blame Unico’s physicial traits to her “paglilihi” or is it something else? Can science better explain things to her and her son?
