Aired every Monday at 9PM on ETC, Emily Owens, M.D. tells the story of an intern doctor who after the hell she went through as a high school student, feels she can finally breathe as she starts her new life as a grown-up. But as she’s about to discover, her internship is going to be a lot like high school. From backstabbing, romance, to gossip, it’s high school all over again.
Emily Owens (Mamie Gummer), a fresh graduate from medical school is about to embark on her internship at Denver Memorial Hospital. Fellow intern Tyra Dupre (Kelly McCreary) warns Emily that like high school, the hospital also has its own cliques. The jocks have become orthopedic surgeons; the mean girls are plastic surgeons; the rebels are in the Emergency Room, and Tyra has her own awkward place as the principal’s kid – her father Dr. Tim Dupre (Harry Lennix) is the chief resident.
Before Emily can wrap her head around this information she discovers that her high school nemesis, the gorgeous and popular Cassandra Kopeslon (Aja Naomi King) is also a new intern at the hospital. She may have a new friend in Tyra, but it doesn’t take long for Emily to realize that the long-standing rivalry between herself and Cassandra is only going to escalate as they compete to impress the intelligent Dr. Gina Bandari (Necar Zadegan), their mentor. Another source of competition between the two will be for the attention of Emily’s med-school crush Will Collins (Justin Hartley). Although Will has made it clear that he only wants to be friends with Emily, she has to admit it bothers her just to see Will and Cassandra talking together.
Meanwhile, Emily is also getting to know the slightly nerdy, but smart and handsome resident Dr. Micah Barnes (Michael Rady). Faced with his own family issues, Emily becomes a great source of support for him which leads to the two becoming close both professionally and personally.
