After Ted Failon’s public service program “Failon Ngayon” did an expose on illegal resorts operating in Boracay last March, authorities finally heeded the call to action and started the demolition of the West Cove Resort recently. The resort, owned by Crisostomo Aquino, is one of the many resorts in the paradise-like island reportedly operating without an Environmental Compliance Certificate or ECC, building permit, and mayor’s permit. It violated environmental laws with its cottages situated right on top of the natural rock formations.
Based on recent records of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), there are still 12 illegally operating resorts in Boracay excluding the West Cove. Will authorities continue to check on the twelve remaining resorts? Or will it take some time before they address the problems facing the island?
