After shocking customers with suddenly sky-high bills in April, the May billing of power distributor Manila Electric Co. will go down by as much as P1.26 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
Meralco external communication head Joe Zaldarriaga said the huge drop in the generation charge component of this month’s electricity bill was due mainly to lower charges by the company’s independent power producers (IPPs).
The cost of power obtained from the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM) likewise fell by around P4 per kWh, further contributing to overall lower generation costs.
Of Meralco’s total electricity supply, around 45-55 percent came from IPPs, while 10-15 percent came from the Wesm. The rest was sourced from the National Power Corp.
