Broadcast journalist Anthony Taberna finds the answer tomorrow (May 23) in “Pinoy True Stories: Demandahan” where he tackles a Supreme Court case about “Josie,” who killed her alcoholic husband “Martin” for frequently abusing her.
The couple’s marriage took a turn for the worse when Martin started squandering money on gambling and alcohol. He often blamed Josie for his losses and frequently battered her for it.
The last straw was drawn when Martin almost killed Josie despite her being eight months pregnant.
The series of brutal events led Josie to feel so locked in danger and distress that she was able to kill her husband.
Josie admitted being guilty of the crime. But how did the Court decide on the case when she anchored her defense on the “battered woman syndrome”? Does BWS constitute self-defense?
